Steve Leung Design Group Transforms China House Mandarin Oriental Bangkok

The China House, a renowned Chaoshan and Cantonese restaurant at Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, recently reopened after renovations by Hong Kong’s Steve Leung Design Group (SLD). Spanning 11,840 square feet, the restaurant is located in a heritage house next to the hotel entrance.

According to Mai Chongchaiyo, chief creative officer of Steve Leung Hospitality (SLH), the redesign of The China House was inspired by Chaozhu and Shantao heritage, but has been reinterpreted through a modern lens. The result is a contemporary nostalgic venue that captures the essence of traditional cuisine.

The restaurant is spread over two floors, with an atrium bar, lounge area, and tea bar on the ground floor. The main dining hall and private dining rooms, along with semi-private salons, are located on the second floor.

To reflect the vibrancy of Thai culture and arts, SLH collaborated with local brands and artisans for the restaurant’s decor. For example, the atrium and staircase feature large pendant lights crafted by Thai artist Saruta Kiatparkpoom, also known as PiN. Jim Thompson wallpapers were chosen for the interior, and timber was provided by Siam Woodland.

The completion of The China House’s transformation also coincides with the official opening of SLD’s Bangkok office, as part of the company’s “Rejuvenation, Diversification, and Globalization” strategy. This move sees the company venturing into new markets.

In Singapore, SLD has recently worked on projects at The Skywaters, a mixed-use development by a Perennial Holdings-led consortium on Shenton Way, and the Paiza Royal Collection suites at Marina Bay Sands. SLH is also known for its work on various luxury homes in Singapore and is looking to expand its presence globally.
