Sandy Tan Designs Spaces Showcase Personality And Memories
Sandy Tan, founder of Chalked design studio, surrounds herself with an eclectic mix of limited edition Bearbrick toys, striking art pieces and personal mementoes in her office. The shelves behind her desk are lined with selected pieces from her collection of Japanese designer toys, including four from a series by American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, whom Tan has admired for his distinctive style.
Her office also showcases mementoes collected throughout her 18-year career as an interior designer, photos of her with friends, and intricately designed 3D-printed art, a technology she believes will shape future interior design trends. This reflects Tan’s approach towards curating spaces, where personal collections are an essential element that ties together the design of a room.
In addition to private homes, Chalked has also designed public spaces, such as the lounge at The Residences at W Sentosa Cove. As the founder of Chalked, Tan has established a strong reputation for herself and her design studio by working on a wide variety of projects, from ultra-wealthy clients’ private homes to show suites and galleries for residential and commercial developments. This year, she was a judge for the EdgeProp Excellence Awards 2025, marking her second year on the panel of six industry experts.
Chalked has been the designer of choice for many developers in Singapore, including City Developments (CDL), GuocoLand, and UOL Group. Recently, the design studio collaborated with CapitaLand to conceptualise the sales gallery and show suites for its latest project, LyndenWoods, a 343-unit residential development in Singapore Science Park. The main challenge was to design a two-bedroom plus study showflat and a four-bedroom unit showflat that would showcase how each space could cater to the lifestyle needs of potential buyers.

“When we design showflats, the key to success is to prioritize the buyer’s needs. Developers carefully craft design briefs to ensure that these needs are clearly demonstrated, and our design team adjusts the level of creativity accordingly,” says Tan. She adds that this results in spaces that feel special and appealing to a wide range of buyers.
Tan was particularly pleased with the design of the two-bedroom plus study unit at LyndenWoods, which explored the use of different materials, such as acrylic, in new and interesting finishes, including an acrylic bar and stool, as well as unique lighting decorations. In recent years, Tan has observed an increasing number of developers and owners engaging her design studio to furnish and design vacant units in completed projects to help sell or lease them. These units primarily belong to ultra-luxury projects like Nouvel 18, Gramercy Park, New Futura, and South Beach Residences.
Tan says that when this process involves unsold developer units, buyers are more likely to purchase the unit with its furnishings. Therefore, it is essential to select durable and low-maintenance materials and furnishings. Chalked has also designed a unit on the 32nd floor of Marina One Residences for a private client.
While the Chalked design studio has taken on a few residential projects in China and India in recent years, Tan’s focus remains on maintaining a boutique, personalized approach in its home market. Tan keeps her Singapore-based team small, with around six members. However, the studio has expanded its back-end operations with two-person teams in Johor, Malaysia, and Manila, Philippines.
Even though Chalked has taken on several international projects, Tan believes that Singapore’s high-net-worth segment continues to provide the most significant opportunities for the studio’s growth. Her observation has been that home owners’ design preferences have shifted towards a minimalist luxury in terms of furniture and finishes. Tan believes this trend will only continue to gain popularity in the upcoming years.
