How Bukit Panjang Town Has Improved Over The Past Decade
The town has undergone many improvements in recent years. For example, the LRT station in Bukit Panjang was built and improved, and the community centre has undergone renovations. In addition, the Town Council is continuously undertaking improvement works that will help create a seamless townscape. New all-weather linkways will be built, and more recreational spaces will be developed to engage residents in play and community activities. Footpaths will also be constructed, and drop-off points for school children and pedestrians will be improved. This improvement is expected to help build a sense of community and bonding among residents.
Bukit Panjang LRT station
The Bukit Panjang LRT station is the first of two planned LRT stations in the city. These stations were announced during the opening of the Woodlands MRT station. The construction work was expected to be completed by 1999. Eventually, the government decided to use Singapore MRT (SMRT) to operate the station. SMRT was chosen over other transport operators to operate the new line, and formed a subsidiary company to manage the system.
Bukit Panjang LRT is set to improve by the year 2022. SMRT has announced plans to add 13 more light rail vehicles to the Bukit Panjang LRT system. These new trains are expected to ease morning and evening peak-hour congestion. The new trains will be introduced gradually into service. They will be tested at the Bukit Panjang depot. The station currently has 19 train cars, so the additional 13 trains will increase the overall capacity by 50%.
Despite the new features, residents were lukewarm about the improvements. Winnie He, a homemaker, says that she rarely uses the LRT. She prefers to use the nearby Segar MRT station. She also says that the improvements have not affected her commute to work.
Improvements to the station could include more bus services. SMRT has announced that there will be 13 new train-cars installed by the third quarter of 2018. However, only seven train-cars are in use. Analysts say that while the new train-cars are an improvement over the past decade, there are still some areas where improvements could be made.
Traffic is another concern in the Bukit Panjang area. Buses and taxis are a better option. The BKE and PIE bus services run from suburban estates to the city. There is also a City Direct bus that reaches Bukit Batok and Hillview.
Despite the development in the area, Bukit Panjang’s residents have remained loyal to their neighbourhood. The community is home to the renowned Bukit Panjang Youth Club. This institution has been around for decades and helped pioneer a youth-led food donation drive.
Improvements to Zhenghua Park
The Bukit Panjang town is located in western Singapore. It used to be a rural settlement before independence. Before development, it was called Kampong Bukit Panjang. Originally, the town’s name was changed to Zhenghua, a Chinese name for “long stretches of hill”. Despite the name change, the Bukit Panjang town has retained its greenery. It has a connection to both the Central Catchment Nature Reserve and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.
There are many improvements planned for Bukit Panjang town. The town already has a LRT station and is expanding its public transport system. New buses and flyovers are being added, and a MRT station is expected to open by 2015. There are also many retail and entertainment outlets in the town, such as Bukit Panjang Plaza.
Recently, the Zhenghua Park was extended by 3.8 ha. This will make the park’s total size 17.3 ha. This expansion will improve the green buffer between the park and Central Catchment Nature Reserve.
The Zhenghua Park in Bu kit Panjang Town is located at the eastern side of town. It has a fitness area, playgrounds, and a 2.5 km cycling track. The Bukit Panjang Town Council oversee its management.
The Bukit Panjang Ring Roadway is a feeder road to the main arterial roads of the town. There are also SMRT buses that serve the neighbourhood. The Bukit Panjang MRT station opened on 27 December 2015, providing direct train access to Downtown Core.
Bukit Panjang is home to a number of parks, including the Zhenghua Park. The Bukit Panjang Park Connector links the two parks and offers schools, a recreational area, and a beautiful view. Bukit Panjang Town also boasts a community library with a colour coding system.
The Senja Residences in Bukit Panjang Town are a 99-year leasehold mixed-use development featuring integrated living. The development is conveniently located near popular shopping centres and public transport stations. This is an excellent investment opportunity.
Improvements to Bukit Panjang LRT station
The Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit (LRT) has suffered several setbacks in the last decade, including a string of breakdowns. A recent upgrade, costing millions of dollars, aims to improve reliability. Past incidents have been blamed on faults in the signalling and traction power systems.
Since November, the capacity of Bukit Panjang LRT has increased by 40%. There will also be 13 more train-cars put into service by the third quarter of 2015. The upgrade will help make the station more accessible to Downtown Line 2 services. Additionally, the BPS1 service will be extended to run in the evening peak from September 2015.
The Bukit Panjang LRT station is now on track to undergo a complete revamp by 2024. This project will include a new signalling system and new trains. The project will also replace the existing power rail. By 2024, the old signalling circuits will be decommissioned. The new upgrade will help alleviate the congestion at Bukit Panjang LRT station.
The LRT system was built in the 1990s, and has many features to accommodate people with disabilities. In addition to lifts, ramps, and a tactile guidance system, every station has barrier-free facilities. Additionally, all stations will feature wider faregates in the future.
The station opened in 1999, and since then it has faced some reliability issues. Due to the undulating terrain and sharp bends, the LRT has suffered from issues like misalignment between the power rail and the collector shoes. This was responsible for 60% of major disruptions. The LRT has upgraded the signalling system and retains its Bombardier guideway system.
Before the opening of the Bukit Panjang LRT station, the area was separated from the city by ten miles. During that time, Bukit Panjang was known as the “vegetable basket” of Singapore. This area was once inhabited by gambier and pepper planters.
Another project will add additional train cars. In the coming years, the LRT system will operate with two-car trains, allowing double the number of passengers to board at one time. The new trains will require modifications to the signaling system. The upgraded system will also provide more frequent train services.
Improvements to Bukit Panjang community centre
The Bukit Panjang community centre has undergone several improvements in the past decade, with new classes and facilities introduced. Before the refurbishment, the centre attracted an average of 2,700 monthly visitors. However, a recent revamp has seen the numbers increase to 3,240. The improvements included installing air-conditioning in the multi-purpose hall, which was previously ventilated by fans. Other improvements include a new dance studio and a rooftop shelter.
The Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit has operated in the area since 1999, but only runs in one direction, making it difficult for people to get around. The light-rail service is only available during off-peak hours, so many residents complain about long queues. Meanwhile, feeder bus services are available in the vicinity of Bukit Panjang Estate, but these are only a temporary solution for residents.
Mr Liang’s hard work on behalf of Bukit Panjang residents has yielded positive results. The LRT system was officially launched in 2000, and residents were involved in the design process. They chose blue trains, and they also preferred barrel-roofed stops. The LRT system also increased the value of Bukit Panjang homes. However, construction of the LRT was noisy and caused a lot of dust.
Bukit Panjang, once a sleepy village, has sprung up as a vibrant town with many new developments. The Bukit Panjang Integrated Transport Hub, which is scheduled to be completed in 2017, is expected to make the town a bustling hub for activity.
The Bukit Panjang LRT system was announced by the government in the same year as the Woodlands MRT station. The proposed LRT would cost S$300 million, and would connect Bukit Panjang with the rest of the city. The plan included plans to build a LRT line that would run through Bukit Panjang, Buona Vista and the Ministry of Education Building.
